About us

Lindholms Violinateljé was founded in 1907 by Erik Lindholm, when he returned to Stockholm after extensive education and practice abroad. The workshop quickly became a leader in the country and highly respected internationally in everything related to making, restoration and expertise regarding violins, violas, cellos, double-basses and their bows. The business was characterized by Erik's thorough education, professional skill and accuracy, which has become the foundation of the Lindholm tradition.

The profession was later passed down from father to son and Bengt Lindholm also acquired an international education. In the middle of the 20th century Bengt came to work in New York with world-class soloists such as Fritz Kreizler, Hubermann, Pyatigorskij and their Stradivarius, Guarnerius and Amati instruments. Through Bengts' careful restoration work and extensive knowledge about old string instruments in expert opinions, Lindholm's reputation was further established. He was later appointed Instrument maker to the Royal Court of Sweden and early an members of the Entente Internationale des Maitres Luthiers et Archetiers d’Art, the leading association within the violin making profession.

Stefan Lindholm is the grandson of Bengt and represents the third generation of luthier within the family. Stefan completed his first violin at the age of 15 and at the age of 28, he had won gold in the Italian violin making competition Concorso Internazionale di Liuteria di Pisogne.
At the age of 16, he moved to the UK to study violin making. After completing his journeyman's exam, Stefan came to delve into complex restoration work on historically valuable instruments and after nine years of education and extensive theory and work exams, Stefan received his Swedish Master's Certificate in 2008, he is the youngest in history to receive this title. During the time that followed, Stefan worked periodically abroad and gained experiences from workshops in Germany, France, Holland and Italy.
Today Stefan mainly focused on new making of violins, violas and cellos for the international market and sound adjustments and service for his local clients.
